Message from the Principal Jeff Jones

19/07/2016

Our vision - ‘Learning for Life- Together’ sends a strong message about what we believe in terms of educating your children. The partnership between parents and the school is a strong one and the most important partnership we have. Our school believes that primary school, the first stage of formal education, adds to the education that you, as families, who are your children’s first teachers, provide. The family/school partnership is a united force designed to give your children the very best opportunity to shine as learners. Our published school wide values underpin this and they promote the philosophy on which we base our actions.

Across the school, literacy is the key to helping your child be successful in all aspects of their learning. Our focus on ‘Learning, leading and loving literacy at Labrador’ is strong, and we have targeted our resources to enhance the outcomes for all children in this area.

Some of the ways in which we are doing this is through the creation of a literacy mentor, the Get Real Reading program, our Intensive English Centre, our differentiation team, our timetables and the continual up-skilling of staff in the teaching of reading and other literacy skills.

As parents, you can be confident in the unrelenting focus our staff has on the improvement of your children’s’ literacy skill set, in particular the individual child’s capacity to comprehend texts and other forms of media, through critical literacy and inferential understanding.

This is the bread and butter work of all education staff. We work at this daily in all areas of the curriculum, not just in English.  There is literacy in everything, mathematics, science, geography, history, art, PE , music, LOTE and the list goes on.
Through the provision of explicit feedback to your child, our staff works tirelessly to improve the levels of achievement gained by each student.

The communication between staff and families is vital to achieving this across the school and it has been pleasing to see so many parents take advantage of the opportunity to speak with staff at the parent/teacher interviews over the past two weeks. Lets keep the partnerships strong.
